How to Get a New Perspective - Today
Do you have kids? Or, are there some kids very close to you that you see all of the time?
Before we had Dominic, we made a GREAT aunt and uncle. Since three of our nephews live about 4 hours away, we only see them about once every month or two. Each time, we are amazed at how much they have grown. But my sister, their mom, never notices. She sees them every day.
It’s easier to tell the difference when you don’t see them every day.
Changing your body is no different.
When you see yourself every morning, it is difficult to notice the change YOUR body is going through.
During our first challenge (link to photos), people at work rarely noticed a difference. In fact, if anything, they wondered why we were being so disciplined when it didn’t seem we were making much of a change. Especially Gino. It was hard to tell that anything was happening under his bulletproof vest and uniform.
Then it happened.
One day I ran into a friend of mine who I hadn’t seen for several weeks. She too had been struggling with her weight and had followed another program where each food had points assigned and she could eat a certain number of points each day.
When she saw me, her jaw dropped. She couldn’t believe what she saw. She asked all kinds of questions about how I had transformed so quickly, what I was doing and how I was achieving such great results. While I know it was difficult for her, it was a huge motivator for me.
Then, at an annual trade show, at least a dozen people who I had seen every year for 6-7 years didn’t even recognize me! I’d walk up, give them a hug, and they’d stare at me blankly. “I’m Tami. DePalma. You know, from MarketAbility?” Finally a spark of recognition spilled over them as they tried to convince themselves that what they saw was real.
When you find yourself wondering if you’re really making a change, call up a friend you haven’t seen for at least a month. Get together with them to see if they notice a difference. Any time you doubt your progress, call up a “new” old friend.
As I said, this can be a difficult time. You’ll be tempted to change things so you can make a bigger difference. But don’t change yet. Consistency is important to your transformation.
However, to keep your program fun and fresh, consider shaking things up a bit. Do your cardio at the same intensity, at the same frequency, for the same period of time. But try a different machine. Or if you walk or run outside, try a different route.
Keep doing weights 3 days a week following Body-for-LIFE methods. But find several different exercises that work the same muscles. This keeps your time in the gym fresh and fun, and keeps your body from adapting to your routine.
Don’t give up now. You’ve come so far! Keep striving. You won’t believe the progress you’ll make, even notice, in the upcoming weeks.
NEXT WEEK
It’s time to get your measurements taken again. Make an appointment with your trainer. And remember. Book it for the same day of the week, at the same time as your last measurements.
We weren't always in-shape and healthy. Six years ago we realized our lives had spiraled out of control.
